With the Job Accommodation Network
People with disabilities are constantly adapting to stay active and independent in their environment.
This is no different in the workplace, but work spaces and demands sometimes present new challenges, requiring additional adaptations or accommodation.
The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a service of the U.S.Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment (ODEP), serving as a wonderful resource to make the transition into the workforce or to a new job easier.
JAN is the leading source of free, expert and confidential guidance on workplace accommodations and disability employment issues, serving people with disabilities as well as employers.
While people who are born with disabilities often become familiar with adapting to their environments, disabilities that occur suddenly or later in life may require major adjustments to daily activities.
“Our goal is to help people better understand what accommodations options there may be for their situation,” said JAN Co-director Anne Hirsch. “We aim to help them become a better self advocate when speaking with their employer by better understanding their rights and how to effectively communicate a request for a reasonable accommodation.”
